More recently, researchers and therapists have begun to appreciate the power of the aha as a catalyst for losing weight, battling addiction, and making other life changes. Historically, such moments have been of scientific interest because of their potential to spark innovation in business. The experiences they credit for jump-starting their transformations are what scientists now refer to as aha or eureka moments: sudden, exhilarating glimmers of insight that allow a person to see something familiar with new perspective or finally connect seemingly unrelated dots to solve a problem. Today, these women have lost a combined total of 427 pounds. Dale Robinson, 61, still chokes up when she talks about an embarrassing incident at an amusement park when she held her grandson's hand as they watched the roller coaster go by without them-because she was too big to fit in the seat. Marnita Wiggins-Nichols, 54, points to a day in the doctor's office, when she learned that her weight had pushed her blood pressure so high it threatened to kill her. For 41-year-old Sarah Charette, it happened in a hospital bed as she gazed at her newborn son, knowing that, physically, she was in no shape to take care of him and his two older siblings.
